Sunset

"Look at the sunset Momma! It's so pretty!" Graham said.

"Yeah," Sloan softly agreed.

We were on our way home from an hour spent at McDonald's Playplace because yes, I am a mom that relies heavily on Happy Meals to keep my kids fed. Mostly because no matter what I cook at home they still end up eating cheese sticks or a spoon full of peanut butter. I haven't officially given up on cooking for them yet but I'm getting close.

Graham was describing the sunset and the colors, taking the time to name each one and how they blended into each other. But to me it was just a sunset, not a particularly pretty one, just day slowly moving into night. But to him it was photograph worthy, to be oohed and aahed over, to be recorded and remembered as being spectacular.

And I stopped, not just glancing, but really seeing, and enjoyed a quick moment in the car with my babies, enjoyed the slowest moment of day; just being there with them, sitting at a stop light, my three and four year old transfixed by the sky.

I took a photo really quickly and he asked to see it, looking between the two. A mediocre cell phone photo and an unimpressive sunset were transformed, revealed to be something incredible and unique.

"The sunset is beautiful," he whispered again.

And for me, with them, it was.
